Interosseous membrane
A strong sheet of connective tissue that links the tibia and fibula along their length. It keeps the two bones spaced in a steady relationship and allows forces from the foot and ankle to travel through a wider area of the lower leg. The membrane provides support for the ankle by helping the bones share rotational and shearing forces during movement. It also serves as an attachment site for several muscles of the lower limb. Its role is not to bear weight directly but to guide and distribute load so the leg can move with stability and ease.
