Anterior Cingulate Cortex

Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) A key region in the brain’s frontal midline that detects internal conflict and coordinates adaptive responses. When a habitual action is inhibited, the ACC registers the mismatch between intention and automatic behaviour, often triggering sensations of disquiet or confusion. This response helps guide conscious redirection rather than automatic repetition. The ACC also assigns relevance to new sensations and actions through motivational salience (Motivational salience refers to the brain’s mechanism for assigning importance and urgency to stimul), shaping the learner’s sense of urgency or emotional investment in change.
